I was taking college courses at the local community college when all of a sudden, I was actually struggling with English!  I never thought that would happen, but I was actually failing because I’d written a paper and made so many errors.  I went to a tutoring center and found a tutor.  This lady was so very helpful to me and was able to explain everything I did wrong with my paper, including any grammatical errors.  She taught me some simple English rules, and I felt confident I could write another paper and make the grade.  I made the grade alright – I ended up with an A!

“konnichi wa” — This is the normal greeting formula during the day when meeting friends, relatives or strangers. In the morning, it is more appropriate to say “ohayou” to friends and relatives. Strangers should be greeted with “ohayou gozaimasu”, which is a bit more formal.
“irrashaimase” — You will hear this all the time in Japan. It means “Welcome” and shop assistants like to repeat this phrase like a machine gun.
“sumimasen” — This means “Excuse me”, but in other contexts, it can also mean “I am sorry”, “Thank you”, or “I am leaving now”. If you don’t know what to say, bow slightly and say “sumimasen”. This is appropriate 90% of the time, you’ll see.
