Checking For The Presence Of An Enlarged Prostate

The commonest of all prostate problems to affect men in their later years is that of a simple enlarged prostate gland which is known in medical terms as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. But just how is this condition diagnosed? The simplest and quickest way to find out if you have an enlarged prostate gland is for your doctor to carry out a physical examination known as a digital rectal examination (DRE). Because the prostate gland is situated between the bladder and the rectum it is a simple matter for the doctor to insert a gloved and lubricated finger into the rectum and to feel the prostate gland to get an idea of both its size and condition. This may not sound like a very pleasant procedure but it is both quick and painless, if perhaps a little uncomfortable, and is something which all men should undergo in their later years as a part of their normal health screening.
