Dog Training Tips

Looking for some helpful dog training tips? Beginning with the basics is your best bet.

1)      Be consistent. Throughout training, use the same words and tone of voice when issuing a command.

2)      Use positive reinforcement to reward good behavior. A special treat or extra affection helps the dog form a positive association with a particular action.

3)      Use negative reinforcement—not physical punishment—to dissuade disobedience or bad behavior. You want to form a trusting bond during dog training. Never physically punish a dog for incorrect behavior! Rather, ignore the behavior or clap your hands loudly to create a negative association with misbehavior.

4)      Socialize, socialize, socialize! Make sure that during training, your dog learns how to behave properly around other people—and other dogs.

5)      Crate training. Dog training should include both crate training and kennel training. Ensure your dog feels safe and comfortable in crate and kennel situations.
