Initial GPS systems were not exactly efficient or accurate. They did the job for what was needed at the time but they have become a lot more advanced as of late. One of the greatest advancements came with the extended ephemeris assisted GPS solution. It is a technology that helps a GPS to have a warm start within 4 seconds of initialization. This is a much better response time over any other system. The competition between manufacturers and demand from the public has led to much faster systems. This is the great thing about competition and has also led to lower prices.
